Women may not realize that what we typically think of as the “male” hormone–testosterone–is responsible for the achievement of orgasm, genital sensitivity, sexual arousal, and libido. According to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, premenopausal ovaries produce approximately half the circulating testosterone in women’s bodies. Even after estrogen replacement, libido was not regained until women supplemented testosterone.
In addition to resurrecting a woman’s libido, testosterone helps build muscle mass, reduce body fat, increase energy, improve the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, increase the positive effects of estrogen therapy, and decrease depression, irritability, nervousness, and insomnia. Spinal bone density is also twice as high in women who add testosterone to their other supplements.
Contrary to commonly heard horror stories, women can take testosterone supplements, especially those that are biologically identical, without growing facial hair, getting deeper voices, and reliving their adolescent bouts of acne. Women who complained of these side effects had been given 10 times the amount of testosterone found naturally in their bodies.
Ask your health care practitioner whether testosterone supplementation may help you increase your libido, energy, and other symptoms that need not be a part of aging.
